DAY TOUR 1

Destination El Dorado - Art & History

El Dorado is about 30 miles east of Wichita, KS.

This could be cut to 1/2 day by making certain selections. If a full day, see El Dorado section for a list of lodging providers.

8:00AM - Pick up a sculpture walk brochure at the El Dorado Main Street Office in the historic Missouri Pacific Depot located at 430 N. Main St.. While there, view the sculptures on the grounds: "Children at Play", "Nick" and "Earth".

Drive downtown for a light breakfast and latte at Scooter's Cooffeehouse, 142 N. Main St..

9:00AM - Butler County History Center & Kansas Oil Museum, 383 E. Central. View the exhibits and walk the street which recreates that of a 1920s oil boom town. See an oil derrick and other oilfield equipment up close. See an authentic residence completely furnished as lived in during El Dorado's oil boom.

10:00 - Drive to the first sculpture "Little Fisherman" at 114 E. Central. Enter Commerce Bank and request the key to the atrium. View the beautiful artwork of the Flint Hills with captions which catch the spirit of the hills, written by Rolla Clymer, former editor of The El Dorado Times and known as the "Sage of the Flint Hills".

Walk to the Coutts Memorial Museum of Art, 110 N. Main St., with the sculpture, "Tell Me About It", on the sidewalk, in front and a magnificent pair of stainless steel horses flanking the entrance.

Continue down to Walter's Flowers & Interiors, 124 N. Main St., and enjoy this beautiful shop. While you're there, say "Hi." to owners Harold and Linda Harmon.

NOON - Lunch at Fiesta Mexicana, 127 N. Main St. On your way there, view the other sculptures on the east side of the street: "His Brand" and "Flight" and the marvelous mosaic, "Glory of the Hills", located in Sculpture Alley, directly north of the Coutts; 112 N. Main and "American Farmer", 120 N. Main.

Following lunch, take in the sculpture "Ploughshares", directly in front of Fiesta Mexicana.

Walk south on the west side of Main St. to view sculptures on West Central and South Main St.: "Sunshowers", 114 W. Central and "A Moment Shared", 218 W. Central.

Cross to the south side of Central and take in the historic Butler County Courthouse and Freedom Memorial, located on the grounds.

Walk back to Main St. and turn south to view the sculptures, "Carla", 111 S. Main St., "Flames", 112 S. Main, and "Daybreak", 100 S. Main.

Drive down to Circle Gallery & Frame Shop, 315 S. Main St., to see fine art by local and regional artists. If you visit on Saturday during the Iron Horse Concert Hall concert season (4th Saturday in September - 1st Saturday in May). Wait until around 7:00pm and attend a performance at 7:30 featuring top perfomers of folk, blues, country, celtic and other genres.

DINNER: Pizza at Pizza Hut, 729 N. Main St. or take your pick from our other fabulous restaurants located in the El Dorado Main Street District.

If spending the night and it's Summertime consider taking in a movie or two at the Star-Vu Drive-In Theater, 1010 S. Haverhill Rd., on the west side of town.
